An excavator relies on a hydraulic system to operate its arm and boom attachments, enabling it to perform various tasks. This hydraulic system is equipped with filters that play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the machinery by screening the hydraulic oil and preventing contaminants from entering the system. To maintain the efficiency of your excavator, it is important to know how to properly change these filters. Follow these detailed steps to accomplish the task:
Vent the Hydraulic Tank
In situations where the excavator has been exposed to cold temperatures that gradually increase throughout the day, it is possible for the hydraulic tank to develop positive pressure. To prevent any oil spillage, it is necessary to vent the tank. Begin by removing the cover on the machine, followed by the fill cap from the hydraulic tank to allow the tank to vent. Always ensure that you remove the fill cap before proceeding to remove the filter cover.
Remove the Filter Cover
Now that the hydraulic tank has been properly vented, you can proceed to remove the filter cover. Carefully take off the cover, making sure to handle it with care. Once the cover is removed, you will notice a suction screen underneath. This screen serves the purpose of preventing contaminants from entering the tank. Take a moment to inspect the metal screen and ensure that it is clean. If you notice any contaminants present, thoroughly clean the screen before reinstalling it.
Remove Hydraulic Return Filter Cap
Moving on to the next step, you will need to remove the cap from the hydraulic return filter. Pay attention to the top of the filter cap as you will come across a snap ring that needs to be removed using pliers. Depending on the excavator model, some machines may have a spring that pops the snap ring up upon removing the cap. As you remove the filter cap, be prepared for a significant amount of oil to drain off the filter. It is advisable to have a drain pan nearby to catch the excess oil and prevent any mess.
Install the New Filter
Carefully examine the new filter to ensure that it matches the length and diameter of the old filter. It's important to note that if you're using an aftermarket filter instead of an OEM filter, there may be some variations. For instance, some aftermarket filters might not have a handle on the top. In such cases, you can remove the handle from the old OEM filter and attach it to the aftermarket filter. Now, place the new hydraulic return filter into the hydraulic canister on the machine. Gently push it down onto the pipe at the bottom of the tank, ensuring a secure fit.
Reinstall the Snap Ring and Covers
Take the snap ring and carefully reinsert it. Then, position the hydraulic filter cap back in place. Make sure to align the bolt holes correctly and insert the bolts securely. Once that's done, proceed to place the other covers back on, namely the filter screen cover and the hydraulic fill cap. Finally, reattach the machine cover to complete this step.
Remove the Old Hydraulic Pilot Filter
Before you begin replacing the old hydraulic filters, have a catch basin ready to collect any oil that may spill. Position the catch basin beneath the filter and use a strap filter wrench or special pliers to carefully pull out the old filter. Once the old filter has been removed, take the new filter and compare it to the old OEM filter. Ensure that they are of the same size and possess the same seals and thread, as this guarantees a proper installation.
Change the Case Drain Filter
Now that the old hydraulic filter has been removed, it's time to change the case drain filter, if applicable to your machine. Not all machines have a case drain filter located behind the pilot filter. If yours does, gently loosen it and remove the filter while simultaneously catching the oil in a drain pan. Take a moment to compare the new drain filter with the old one to ensure a proper fit. Before installation, lubricate the seal using a small amount of old oil.
Install the Pilot Filter
With the new pilot filter in hand, apply a thin coat of old oil to lubricate the seals. Begin screwing the filter onto the threaded area by hand, ensuring a firm but not overly tight fit.
