Master the Art of Excavator Controls: Unveiling Joystick Patterns and Operation Secrets

Discover the crucial joystick patterns that govern the movement of the boom, bucket, dipper, and swing during excavator operations. Unveil the distinction between the two primary operator control patterns, ISO and SAE, to enhance your proficiency. Explore indispensable excavator safety guidelines to ensure a secure working environment.

ISO vs. SAE: Excavator Joystick Control Patterns

When operating an excavator, it is crucial to understand the two main control patterns: ISO and SAE. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) have established these patterns, each with its own characteristics and applications.

ISO, also known as "CAT controls" or "excavator controls," is the more prevalent pattern worldwide. It employs the right-hand lever to manage the boom and bucket, while the left-hand lever controls the dipper (stick) and swing movements. On the other hand, SAE, often referred to as "John Deere Controls" or "backhoe controls," is a standard in the United States. In SAE pattern, the right-hand lever operates the dipper (stick) and bucket, while the left-hand lever controls the boom and swing.

For operators working with different machines or preferences, newer excavator models may feature a lever to switch between the ISO and SAE control patterns. This lever could be located under the cab's floorboard or behind a panel for easy access.

It is essential to familiarise yourself with the control pattern your machine uses. Typically, there is a reference card on the equipment that indicates the specific control pattern being employed. By understanding and adapting to these control patterns, operators can efficiently and effectively operate excavators according to the established industry standards.

ISO Controls

Discover the ISO Controls, the standard operator control setup for efficient operation. Follow this pattern for seamless control:

Left-hand lever (dipper and swing):

- Toward you: Bring dipper (stick) towards you

- Away from you: Extend dipper (stick) away from you

- Left: Swing left

- Right: Swing right

Right-hand lever (boom and bucket):

- Toward you: Raise the boom

- Away from you: Lower the boom

- Left: Curl bucket in (to close)

- Right: Curl bucket out (to dump materials)

SAE Controls

Explore the unique SAE Controls pattern, distinct from the ISO standard. With SAE, the left-hand Joystick operates the boom and swing, while the right-hand joystick manages the dipper and bucket. Note that both standards share the left-hand joystick for swing control. The SAE pattern entails:

Left-hand lever (boom and swing):

- Toward you: Raise the boom

- Away from you: Lower the boom

- Left: Swing left

- Right: Swing right

Right-hand lever (dipper and bucket):

- Toward you: Bring dipper towards you

- Away from you: Extend dipper away from you

- Left: Curl bucket in (to close)

- Right: Curl bucket out (to dump materials)

How to Operate an Excavator

To operate an excavator safely and effectively, it is essential to follow a set of important steps. Prior to entering the excavator, ensure that the door is securely locked to the side of the machine. This will not only allow you to use the handle to climb in safely but also prevent the wind from unexpectedly closing the door against you. As you climb into the cab, maintain three points of contact to ensure stability and prevent any accidents.

Once inside the cab, adhere to the following guidelines:

- Always fasten your seat belt first to prioritize safety.

- Release the door lock and securely close the door to maintain a controlled environment within the cab.

- Familiarize yourself with the various controls of the excavator before commencing operation to ensure smooth and efficient handling of the machine.

By carefully following these steps, you can operate the excavator with confidence and precision, promoting a safe working environment for yourself and those around you.

Driving and Parking

Operating an excavator involves a series of crucial steps to ensure safety and efficiency. Before initiating any movement with the excavator, it is essential to adhere to the following guidelines:

- Start the excavator by turning the key in the ignition.

- Check the display for any error codes and confirm the availability of an adequate fuel supply.

- Engage the safety lock lever to prevent the controls from functioning while the excavator is locked.

The excavator is equipped with two track pedals, each corresponding to a track. These pedals can be operated using both hand controls and foot pedals, allowing for versatility in control. To move the excavator forward, push both track pedals forward, and to move in reverse, pull both pedals back. Steering and manoeuvring the excavator require a combination of pedal operations. For optimal control, ensure that the cab is aligned with the tracks for a clear orientation.

When it comes to parking the excavator, follow these steps:

- Lower the bucket to the ground.

- Lower the safety lock lever.

- Turn off the power by using the key.

Digging and Trenching

To maximise stability during excavation, maintain a straight line alignment. Follow these steps to effectively operate the excavator bucket:

- Extend the dipper/stick and bucket fully, then lower it to approximately a foot above the ground.

- Position the bucket teeth downwards, lower it to penetrate the ground, and subsequently curl the bucket to dig and collect material.

- Elevate the bucket to a height of five to six feet, then pivot either left or right to discharge the contents.

- Repeat the process.

With increasing proficiency, utilise both levers simultaneously to skim a thin layer from the ground surface.

Backfilling

For efficient backfilling, simply reverse the digging process. Remember to keep the bucket closer to the ground this time. To speed up the process, try scraping and swinging simultaneously. You may also flatten the bucket and utilize its back or side to push material into the hole while swinging back or sideways. Be cautious with heavy loads or excessive material.

Grading

When it comes to altering the grade or slope of a piece of land, an excavator proves to be an invaluable tool for various applications, whether it be preparing a construction site or directing the flow of water in a specific direction. This task can be accomplished by utilising the excavator bucket or a grading attachment, with the following meticulous steps to guide you through the process:

- Begin by positioning the bucket in a downward direction and gently raking the ground with the bucket to loosen the soil effectively.

- Proceed by pulling the bucket straight back along the ground, allowing it to scrape and accumulate the material to the designated area for elevation. Utilise the bottom of the bucket to evenly distribute the material.

- Maintain a steady angle with the bucket to ensure a consistent and uniform grade throughout the entire area, thereby achieving precision and accuracy in the grading process.

Are Backhoe and Excavator Controls the Same?

While many modern excavators and backhoes can operate with both SAE or ISO controls, historically, backhoes usually used SAE controls and excavators ISO controls. Today, although backhoes and excavators may share the same joystick control pattern, the overall operational controls differ between the two machines. Control systems also vary depending on the manufacturer and specific machine model. Additionally, due to the front loader and wheels on a backhoe, the driving pedals and controls are distinct from those on an excavator equipped with tracks.
